There are medications that can help to reduce the anxiety associated with social phobia. Therapy will help as well. There is no quick cure, since you will have to learn new habits and social ettiquette. Stick with therapy, and read self-help books about getting over shyness or books about interpersonal communication.

You need a combination of medication and therapy to help you with your medical needs. This is a combination of a chemical imbalance in your body and a social/interaction behavioral problem.

There are anti-anxiety medications like Valium, to help when you have an anxiety attack. These are real and can be very debilitating to one's life. That deals with the chemical part.

Now, to deal with the heart of your anxiety such as dealing with strangers, self-image, etc., you need to work with a therapist to get to the root of your problems and learn some techniques to help you cope with those social situations which are painfully troubling you. You need to train your mind to react differently then you have in the past and this takes as much work as if you were lifting weights for body building. It's exhausting but worth it.

With the combination of medicines and therapy, you should be on the road to a happier you. You are worth it!!
Good luck!

There are several medications available to help with social phobia. It is a very common condition, and it is nothing to be ashamed of. There are anti-anxiety medications often referred to as "benzos" that can help. Also, many times social phobia is caused by an underlying condition such as depression or bipolar disorder, in which that condition would need to be treated in order to make all symptoms go into remission.

My best advice is to schedule an appointment with you PCP or a mental health MD. There are tons of options out there to help. You should not have to suffer!

Xanex did wonders for me- I was having trouble talking face to face with strangers after my Mom died. Go to your primary care doc and see what he/she recommends.
